Since the Euro 5 emissions standard was introduced, EGR coolers were added to the EGR system to reduce emissions further. How Does an EGR Cooler Work?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system pretreats exhaust to reduce diesel emissions. In addition to the EGR valve, the system now includes a cooler to help cool down exhaust gases before re-injecting them into the engine. Why? Cooling helps to reduce harmful gases which form at higher temperatures. While the cooler plays a key role in reducing emissions, it deals with several stresses that can lead to a failure, especially if improperly installed. We’ll illustrate the role of the EGR system in the overall combustion process and how it reduces emissions. We’ll also explain how parts like turbos can also affect the EGR cooler’s function.

EGR Coolers include intricate parts like small cooling tubes, which are essential to performing cooling functions. These cracks can leak coolant into the exhaust and combustion system, which burns the coolant, leading to more problems. The way the EGR is connected to coolant systems can also create problems.
