There are many different types of Dual Mass Flywheel, and their tolerances are usually specific to the vehicle to which they are fitted. We’ll introduce the different types of DMF so you understand the advantages of each, and we’ll show you photos of each variation so you can easily recognise them. We’ll explain the differences in tolerance of movement between different DMF designs and how to find the recommended tolerance for each type of DMF. Learn how to know if a DMF is within tolerance with two tests.

We’ll walk you through each step of the secondary free-play angle measurement test. You’ll see a cross-section diagram to understand where the secondary flywheel is located. You’ll learn how to handle the DMF during the test and how to recognise wear or damage. We’ll demonstrate the technique so you’ll clearly understand how to perform the test. You’ll also learn two different ways to measure the free-play angle, and which is simpler.

Learn how to perform the second test: checking the tilt balance. We’ll take a look at two types of technology that affect the tilt/rock of the DMF, and examine the visible differences in a side-by-side comparison. We’ll show you where these parts are located in the DMF and how they vary in tolerance. You’ll learn what parts you need for the test and what order to perform each step. We’ll tell you how to know if a DMF exceeds the maximum tolerance acceptance criteria.
