Learn Common Issues, Their Symptoms, and How to Avoid Problems
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve was invented to reduce emissions in diesel vehicles by re-injecting exhaust gas into the engine. Since the Euro 5 emissions standard was introduced, EGR coolers were added to the EGR system to reduce emissions further. Today, EGR coolers have become an important component in diesel emissions control systems. In this 18-minute free webinar, you will learn how to avoid EGR cooler failures during fitment.
How Does an EGR Cooler Work?
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system pretreats exhaust to reduce diesel emissions. In addition to the EGR valve, the system now includes a cooler to help cool down exhaust gases before re-injecting them into the engine. Why? Cooling helps to reduce harmful gases which form at higher temperatures. While the cooler plays a key role in reducing emissions, it deals with several stresses that can lead to a failure, especially if improperly installed. We’ll illustrate the role of the EGR system in the overall combustion process and how it reduces emissions. We’ll also explain how parts like turbos can also affect the EGR cooler’s function.
Common Issues of EGR Coolers
EGR Coolers include intricate parts like small cooling tubes, which are essential to performing cooling functions. When the part is fitted in the circuit, bubbles in the system can develop hot spots on these parts, leading to cracks. These cracks can leak coolant into the exhaust and combustion system, which burns the coolant, leading to more problems. The way the EGR is connected to coolant systems can also create problems. We’ll explore these and other common issues of EGR coolers.
EGR Cooler Symptoms
What’s the first sign of EGR cooler failure? Our webinar will review the common symptoms of engine management system problems and explain frequent EGR system failures. We’ll briefly touch on sources that can increase the EGR cooler temperature to the point of failure. The webinar will also explore the main EGR cooler issues we see in the warranty returns department by examining an item returned during warranty. The damage to this item illustrates how these failures can occur and which parts are the most vulnerable. Finally, we’ll recommend steps to take to avoid these issues.
How to Avoid EGR Cooler Issues
Understanding how to properly fit a new EGR cooler is crucial to avoid damaging the part. This requires knowledge of best practices for EGR cooler replacement and specific tests to ensure the cooling system is working properly. We’ll give advice on this and how to correctly bleed the coolant system to avoid issues like hot spots and cracks.
Valeo EGR Replacement Parts
As Valeo offers EGR coolers and valves to OEMs, your vehicle may already be fitted with a Valeo part. If you need to replace it, Valeo offers EGR coolers, EGR valves, and modules as replacement parts for the aftermarket.
