Valeo Electrical Systems +48V iBSG

48v Mild Hybrid systems are an increasingly popular way to electrify Internal Combustion Engine vehicles. What components of the 48v system permit these impressive efficiency gains?

What is an IBSG ?

Learn about This New Technology from a Valeo Expert

Alternators have long been featured in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, but integrated belt starter generators (iBSG) are starting to replace them in many new cars. So how exactly do iBSGs operate, and why are they becoming so popular? In this 12-minute free webinar, you will get a brief overview of the integrated belt starter generator (iBSG.)

What Are Hybrid Vehicles?

The term hybrid can apply to many different types of vehicles. Certainly, it applies to full-hybrid systems that many manufacturers have long offered, but does it include vehicles with a start-stop system? We’ll explain the different types of hybrids, including mild hybrids, full hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. You’ll discover the differences between each type, which parts are only used in specific hybrids, and the answer to questions like ‘can you drive a mild hybrid on battery power alone?’

What is an Integrated Belt Starter Generator (iBSG)?

Since Integrated belt starter generators serve a similar purpose to alternators, how are they different? Does an iBSG still need a starter generator and 12v battery? We’ll answer these questions and explain the working principle of iBSGs and each stage of iBSG operation. You’ll learn how each step of operation helps improve efficiency, and how much more efficient iBSGs are than alternators. We’ll tell you why the iBSG is needed in electrified vehicles and how the iBSG, sometimes called the 48v belt starter generator, is integral to 48v systems.

What Components Are Used in An iBSG?

How does an iBSG connect to the engine, and what are its physical components? Learn about the iBSG system’s components, their dimensions and weight, and what each part is used for. We’ll tell you what criteria are crucial to preserve reliability and prevent premature wear. We’ll also introduce parts like dual-stage tensioners and the Mosfet, and you’ll learn why Mosfets are a massive improvement over the diodes used in the past.

You’ll discover the other parts of a 48v system to see how they function, with diagrams of components like DC-DC converters. We’ll explain how the DC-DC converter is important for precharging the iBSG and how its 12V buck function works.

What Are the Advantages of an iBSG and Its Related Components?

Why are 48v systems rapidly proliferating? What efficiency gains do iBSGs offer over alternators for fuel consumption? Are 12v batteries destined to disappear? We’ll answer all of these questions, and you’ll discover whether you can safely work on 48v systems without special qualifications. This webinar is an excellent introduction to iBSGs and other parts you’ll likely see more often in the future. If you ever need to order spare parts for a 48v car, Valeo offers most parts needed for a 48v system. You can find replacement parts in the Valeo Tech@ssist parts finder portal.
