Should a Dual Mass Flywheel be Reconditioned?

Discover the different types of flywheels and which ones should never be reconditioned.

Should You Recondition a Flywheel?

Learn When Not to Recondition a Flywheel and Avoid a Costly Mistake

Flywheels are an essential component of clutch systems used in many vehicles. They help to transmit torque, filter out vibrations, and absorb and dissipate heat from the clutch. If damaged, certain types of flywheel can be resurfaced instead of replaced, but not all of them! Watch this brief 12-minute free webinar to learn whether a dual mass flywheel should be reconditioned or entirely replaced.

How Are Flywheels Damaged

A cracked, burnt, or simply worn flywheel requires attention, especially when fitting a new clutch to a vehicle. That’s because when a flywheel is damaged, it no longer has an even surface, which can cause the clutch to slip, vibrate, or judder. This vibration makes operating the vehicle unpleasant or even impossible, depending on the damage or wear. It also makes it easier for the clutch to overheat. There are several visible signs of wear that can determine your flywheel is damaged enough to warrant an outright replacement. But in some cases, a repair may be possible.

When Can You Resurface a Flywheel

If your flywheel isn't performing correctly, you may have another option before buying a new or refurbished dual mass flywheel. Simply smoothing over the uneven surface can, in theory, alleviate the symptoms of a damaged flywheel. There are a few different techniques to resurface it to the correct tolerance, which requires careful measurements. Resurfacing a flywheel could be a tempting way to save money because you don't have to purchase a new flywheel. Still, important precautions need to be taken before attempting to resurface one.

For certain types of flywheels, resurfacing could be a costly mistake. That’s why it's crucial to understand the difference between a solid mass flywheel and a dual mass flywheel before you attempt to resurface it!

Dangers of Resurfacing a Flywheel

Not all flywheels are the same. Some flywheel types contain intricate parts that can be irreparably damaged by resurfacing. Even worse, this damage often isn’t visible. That's why it's essential to understand the risks before accidentally ruining your flywheel with shards of metal or metallic dust. It's doubly important to heed warnings like "DO NOT MACHINE" because any damage may not be covered by warranty claims. Discover why this important part should be treated carefully and which specific parts should never be disturbed.

Why Choose Valeo Flywheels

Are you looking for a reconditioned dual mass flywheel? You may want to consider buying a new part instead. Valeo is an OE manufacturer of high-quality flywheels. If you do decide to replace the flywheel, Valeo offers a wide range of clutch products, including several types of flywheels. Valeo gives you the option to buy the part individually or as part of a module kit including the clutch.

What You Will Learn in Our Webinar

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to use the calibration rig on an actuator
  • What formula to use for correct actuator calibration
  • What measurements to use for correct actuator calibration

Afterwards, you can download materials like technical service bulletins on Valeo Dual Dry Clutches, including tooling requirements and actuator calibration. You may want to print out the actuator calibration bulletin for reference when performing the calibration.
