Thermostats for Cars
Valeo thermostat range: Protect your engine and heat exchangers in extreme temperature conditions
The role of the thermostat is to control the flow of hot water through the radiator. The thermostat is integrated and mounted on the engine block, adjusting the coolant flow towards the radiator. Valeo thermostats match the specifications of the O.E. products, for consistent performance and durability. Valeo proposes a wide range of 381 parts numbers, covering more than 50 car makers.
The primary function of a thermostat is to maintain a minimum operating temperature in the car's engine. When the engine is started, the antifreeze and coolant mixture is kept within the engine by the thermostat. It opens upon reaching a specified temperature. Coolant will then flow through the radiator to keep the engine at a temperature close to the rated temperature of the thermostat. Three main thermostat types are currently available in the Valeo range:
1 Conventional wax thermostats:
- Proven product
- Minimal storage space required
- High volume production
- Pre-defined opening temperature
- Affordable price
2 Electrically heated wax thermostats:
- Improved operating range through variable opening temperature
- Quick response time through optional current feed
- Advanced engine management for reduced emissions and improved fuel consumption
- Compatibility with conventional thermostats
3 Electrically actuated thermostats:
- Full control without temperature dependency
- Maximum possible operating range
- Adaptable to modern temperature management requirements

Valeo info:
Thermostat Failure The thermostat can stick shut if the wax element has been damaged by previous overheating, corrosion or age. If the thermostat fails to close, the constant flow of coolant through the thermostat will prevent the engine from reaching the normal operating temperature. This can cause poor drivability in cold weather, a sharp increase in fuel consumption, little or no heater output, etc. The thermostat also has to be replaced in the event of water pump replacement.
